The Psychological Impact Of Gynecomastia In Men
Owning a pair of man boobs is no fun at all. For men suffering with this condition, Gynecomastia as it is medically called comes with benign swelling of breast tissue during puberty or old age. Some who are lucky, when man boobs stem from obesity and fat deposits around the chest area it is a matter of time that they naturally disappear with prescribed medication, exercise and diet plans. For the rest, 30-50% of the adult male population that deal with Gynecomastia, it could be a tribulation for life, a complete loss of self-confidence, insecurity and acute social phobias.
In an era of well sculpted, contoured bodies, the unabashed male body shaming brought in by Gynecomastia is decidedly unacceptable. Further, fashion trends today dictate the slim, fit look and gone are the days for baggy style when you could possibly hide your flabby chest. This makes you more noticeable than in times past and a stronger reason to feel different or rather “cut-off”!
What are the culprits?
The causes of Gynecomastia are never the same for all. While the exact reasons are not known Gynecomastia should be first differentiated from simple breast enlargement caused by fat being build up behind and around the areola region. Proper case of Gynecomastia should be distinguished from Pseudo Gynecomastia (lipomastia), which is characterized by fat deposition without Glandular proliferation. One or more of the following factors may influence this condition like:
- High male estrogen levels that are out of balance with testosterone levels
- Street drugs like marijuana, heroin and even intake of excessive alcohol
- Herbal over- the- counter products such as tea tree and lavender
- Long term medications
- Genetics and family history
- Chronic diseases associated with kidney and liver
Corrective plastic surgery (male breast reduction) is often the answer and the preferred option to get rid of enlarged male breasts. A complete medical assessment must be performed before heading for surgery. While liposuction and fat freezing can effectively remove excess fatty tissue, it may be the option for men who suffer from Pseudo Gynecomastia. For patients with Pure Glandular Gynecomastia, liposuction can be combined with the removal of breast tissue by incision.
